The Christmas Secret (2000 and 2014) │ Triphala

My gosh, I had a lousy night of it trying to keep myself asleep overnight!

However, because I wanted to get out early this morning to do some grocery shopping, I dared not rise too early into the a.m. My clock radio read something like 6:15 a.m. when I finally started my morning. I came here to my computer, and noticed that the time was actually an hour earlier.

I quickly understood that overnight we had undergone entry into Pacific Standard Time, and I had not read nor heard a word about the imminent change this weekend. But no harm was done ─ it was not as if I had been fooled into rising earlier than needed. In fact, the earlier hour was actually more to my liking.

And I did get away and do that shopping, making what was close to a three-mile round trip hike. I first went to the outdoor ATM at the Coast Capital Savings building (Google map) over by the King George SkyTrain Station so that I could deposit the monthly expenses reconciliation cheque my younger brother had given me yesterday; and from there, I continued on to Save-On-Foods (Google map) in downtown Whalley and did the shopping I wanted to get done.

My brother had spent last night at the residence of his girlfriend Bev, so I was a little surprised to come home and find him already here. If it was after 9:00 a.m., it could not have been much after.

I was to find that he was shut up in his bedroom, evidently having returned directly to bed. He clearly had a bad night himself. Unfortunately, this early nap meant that he would be taking off for the afternoon especially early, leaving here barely into the noon hour. I was just getting up from a needed nap myself.

Okay, I wanted to talk about a couple of Christmas movies that I watched last evening while enjoying some drink.

The first movie was a mistake, but it turned out to be the superior feature, and had me very tearful at times as my drink kicked in. I love Christmas movies and the emotion they evoke, but it is utterly draining for me. Normally, one is about all I can handle when I watch any by myself.

I truly believe that the Christmas season would probably be the easiest for me to suicide in ─ booze, the emotion of a  hugely sentimental Christmas movie, and Christmas music and lights ─ the perfect combination to bring myself to a sobbing finish.

Now, the reason that the first movie was a mistake is because I was seeking a 2000 movie titled The Christmas Secret. It was listed as being available at rarefilmm.com, and I could play it here on my computer using my Firefox browser; but for some reason I could not get the movie to play using the Chrome browser that I have downloaded into my T9 Android 8.1 TV Box, where I would have been able to watch the movie on my T.V. screen.

There is also a 2014 movie that is identically titled as The Christmas Secret. I expected that it would be more readily available, so I was focussed on finding the earlier elusive movie.

I researched here on my computer and found a few questionable websites that offered the movie.

By "questionable websites," I specifically mean that my Malwarebytes software kept warning that it was blocking attempts at these websites by yet other websites that were trying to intrude and which presented "RiskWare" or "Malvertising" or even "Fraud" threats.

Because of those threats, I will not mention any of the websites. But I accessed one of the websites using my Chrome browser in my Android TV Box ─ the website had both movies on offer once I entered the title in a search field. The result displayed a mini-poster for the earlier movie along with a link to the movie; and there was another mini-poster of the more recent movie with its own source link.

I selected the earlier movie and got set to enjoy it.

After a number of minutes I became suspicious because there was no trace yet of actors Richard Thomas nor Beau Bridges, and I knew that they had key roles. And then I realized that the website had misfiled its movie links. I quickly checked here at my computer, and found that both movie links were to the same 2014 film.

But I was enjoying it, so I stuck with it. Lead actress Bethany Joy Lenz completely stole my heart in her role. She was not familiar to me, but I see at Wikipedia's listing of her acting credits that I must surely have seen her in at least a couple of T.V. series, but I could not remember her.

As I said earlier, I shed a lot of tears watching the movie ─ it made me feel so lonely and...hopelessly old.

When the movie was done, I used another of those questionable websites that did definitely offer the older movie, but I could not get the movie to display as a full screen presentation. In fact, not only was the player not full screen, but the top of the movie was hidden by the website's rather thick horizontal menu bar. Often, the heads of characters would be wholly obscured when the scene was not close up.

This was of course annoying and also very distracting, keeping me from losing myself into the story.

However, it was too incredible to get lost in ─ especially toward the end. The sleigh ride scene where Santa, his lead elf, and Richard Thomas's character are eluding a couple of planes ─ one a military jet ─ was beyond bearing. Richard Thomas's character even leapt from the sleigh and kept hopping forward from one flying reindeer to another in order to reach Rudolph ─ utter nonsense.

And then in order to unite the character with his wife and daughter at a small Alaskan airport, Santa dropped Richard Thomas's character from the clouds and had him land safely into a small pile of snow that wasn't more than three or four feet deep.

It was just too ridiculous ─ the movie was for little kids.

It is unfortunate that I had so much trouble finding a link to it, but at least I am now free to move on to other Christmas movies. As for the 2014 movie, I will be tuning it in for my younger brother and his girlfriend Bev when he brings her over for the usual two-day Christmas movie binge we indulge in annually. I honestly would love to watch it again ─ I was truly smitten by the portrayal of the lovely character that Bethany Joy Lenz provided.

On a different matter, I just want to link to a brief article on a vaunted health-endowing substance I have been reading about for a number of months now, but I have yet to notice it being sold in the few stores that I tend to frequent: tryphala.

This latest article was published early today:

JacksDailyDose.com

An article about triphala from a month ago is at MedicalNewsToday.com: What are the benefits of triphala? Uses, evidence, and risks.

Originally I had thought that it was a type of spice, but evidently not.

There are a couple of articles about triphala from early last year at Healthline.com:
That second article includes a section discussing dosages.

I want to have a bath, and maybe even another nap. I might then get myself out to perform some shopping for Christmas lights. I do not drive, so I would have to walk.

However, if my younger brother is back home (from wherever he is drinking) before I get away, I will perforce remain home.
