My Younger Brother's 67th Birthday

My younger brother was not yet home last evening from wherever he had been drinking when I decided to get myself to bed and avoid having to sit up late with him.

I was abed before it was yet 9:30 p.m.

Sleep took its time arriving; however, I cannot with any certainty say that I recall hearing him whenever it was that he did arrive home.

When I eventually checked the time around 12:25 a.m., I decided to get up and get to work on the day's content assignment for the post I have in development at one of my six hosted websites.

I had been in bed perhaps barely over three hours.

I was cautious about opening my bedroom door in case my brother happened to be downstairs watching T.V., but I saw his bedroom door to be shut tight ─ he was in for the night.

My wife had worked the long day at her friend's Thai restaurant, but she had still yet to come home. It was 1:20 a.m. when I finally heard her laboriously unlocking the front door.

Apparently someone had turned off the motion-activated light just outside of the front door, so she had to struggle in the dark to get her key properly inserted into the lock.

I had something for her to sign, so I went downstairs with it ─ a birthday card for my younger brother. Today is his 67th birthday.

When he rose this morning, this is what he was to find awaiting him on the dining table:

When I bought the lottery scratch ticket, I did not realize that it cost $30 ─ I had thought that it was a $10 ticket.

As for the 1.75-litre bottle of Scotch ─ which actually came in a nice carton ─ it cost $52.99 before taxes.

So all told, I probably spent a minimum of $95 on the birthday boy.

Anyway, my wife's youngest son was just about set to go to bed when his mother got home.

She had a small snack, and then soon enough retired, expressing that she hoped that she was not becoming sick.

I carried on with my work, and then eventually took a break to perform my daily plank ─ currently, my daily planks are for six minutes' duration...plus some extra seconds to be comfortably certain I am meeting that expectation.

I fact, this a.m. I added on an extra 15 seconds.

Believe me, these are not easily performed!

Awhile after I had resumed work on the website post, my wife unexpectedly emerged from the bedroom to use the bathroom, still expressing her concern that she might be coming down with some illness.

She needs to take better care of herself ─ and one big step would be to keep far more sensible hours than she does. She parties excessively.

I don't know if it's because she is mad to be doing so, or if she just cannot deny her friends no matter how tired she may feel.

My work took me longer than I expected ─ it was a few minutes past 5:00 a.m. by the time I had returned to bed. I had been up for a little in excess of 4½ hours.

After some needed sleep, it was shortly after 9:00 a.m. when I checked the time and carefully rose for the morning. My brother was downstairs watching T.V., but I came here to my computer which I keep upstairs in a small room next to my bedroom.

Then to my surprise ─ it could not have been any later than 9:30 a.m. ─ my wife came forth from the bedroom and went downstairs.

She normally does not rise until around 10:00 a.m. to begin readying for her workday, and the drive to get to her friend's restaurant for her 11:00 a.m. start there.

Not only did she rise early, but it was barely after 10:00 a.m. when she left home. She must have had something else afoot besides a determination to arrive to work early.

I fixed up my day's first hot caffeinated beverage, and then went into the living room to join my brother. He doesn't know how to operate our T9 Android 8.1 TV Box, so he relies upon me to spare him having to settle for the limited offerings available through the basic cable package we subscribe to.

My brother is becoming distressingly corpulent in the midsection; and I am certain that this has much to do with why his body struggles with excess heat.

The morning was cool ─ the sky heavily hazed over. Yet he had the front door ajar, and the sliding glass door to the backyard sundeck equally wide.

I sat down on the chesterfield with my hot beverage...and was immediately uncomfortable from the undesired chilly breeze that the living room ceiling fan was throwing at me.

That was the last straw ─ birthday or not, I was not going to spend two or three hours suffering the chilly discomfort that my brother feels is necessary in order to reduce his excess body heat.

So I stood right back up and came back upstairs here to my computer.

No doubt he must have wondered what was up ─ why I was not summoning up some episodes of the shows we watch via our Android TV Box.

However, he never bothered to enquire, so I offered him nothing by way of any explanation.

I reckon that he bore all the dreary T.V. he could handle, and then just before 11:00 a.m. returned to his bedroom to seek some further rest.

A few minutes after 11:00 a.m., I was back in my own bed doing the same.

I spent about 1½ hours back in bed. And when I rose and emerged from my bedroom, I found that my brother had gone.

But his absence was short-lived ─ I think that he only went out to get a haircut.

As he returned to his bedroom to finesse the barbering and also clear away any annoying residual shavings, he thanked me for his birthday gifts.

I think that he then sought some further bedrest.

I took the opportunity to have some exercise with my 43½-pound dumbbell, and then I fixed up a small repast.

My brother emerged from his bedroom awhile later, and then took his leave for the afternoon. I cautioned him not to overdo matters, for his drinking crowd would undoubtedly be celebrating him with some drinks.

It may well be that I'll be getting to bed early again come the evening, for it will surprise me if he shows up here too early on his birthday. Nor is he likely to be particularly desirable company once he does get home.

I got in some time in the backyard during the mid-afternoon while there was quite a lot of weak sunshine. Attired in just a pair of cutoffs, at 2:49 p.m. I spent just over 40 minutes slouched low into a deckchair or lawn-chair while facing directly at the Sun.

That was a crucial choice, for by the late afternoon the sky had become overcast. I would even venture that some rain is ahead before the new day dawns tomorrow.

I have some things I want to do yet this day, so I am going to bring this post to a close.
