Home by Christmas

Three nights ago in bed, I found myself experiencing a jabbing or piercing pain just to the right centre of my skull ─ the pain would strike in the most keenly fashion for a second or so, and then disappear for awhile until the next jab.

It was an annoying presence over the day on Thursday, and bothered me again that night. I suppose that it was yesterday that I figured out that I was probably afflicted with a virus.

I had begun wondering if maybe my earplugs that I wear at night had allowed my right ear to become infected. Although I do not have a sore throat, as of yesterday I found that swallowing is difficult, but only because if it was not done with conscious attention to reduce the normal vigour that attends such a common act, then there would be some pain in my right ear that often translated to the jabbing pain higher up in my skull.

Swallowing while eating is considerably more difficult to manage painlessly. I almost have to try and swallow to the left of my throat to reduce the reaction into my right ear.

I noticed overnight and today that my nasal passages may have been a little 'runnier' than normal, and possibly even a tad feverish.

Note that my younger brother and my eldest stepson have both been suffering from a cold virus for quite a few days ─ maybe even a couple of weeks.

Has one of them bequeathed a mutated version of whatever has been afflicting them?

I typically use homemade nasya oil to keep my nasal passageways and sinuses lubricated. I use almond oil as the carrier oil, and to a tiny container of the oil I add a number of drops of oregano oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil, and eucalyptus oil.

Then every day or two, I will use a dropper and ─ while lying down ─ apply the mix of oils into my nasal passages, usually feeling some of the oil immediately reaching my throat.

I have been doing this for the past couple or more months. Thus, it may be that for this reason, if I have been transmitted a cold virus, it has been unable to propagate in my throat and sinuses due to the potential anti-viral protection afforded by some of the oils.

And so the virus has had to make do with my right ear.

But that damned piercing pain in my topmost skull that can attend swallowing can almost be debilitating ─ sometimes I involuntary flinch and wince from the brief attack.

Of course, the pain jab can occur spontaneously without any swallowing being involved.

In all of my 70 years, I cannot ever recall anything like this.

Yesterday morning I used a dropper and filled my right ear with hydrogen peroxide while lying upon my opposite side ─ I lay there for at least 10 minutes, listening to the constant 'explosions' of the hydrogen peroxide as it fizzed away.

There is no pain in doing this sort of thing, and it is reputed to be able to thwart the onset of a cold if one engages in the practice before the cold gets fully established.

Unfortunately for me that morning, I was unable to easily drain my ear afterward, and I had to suffer reduced hearing for a few hours until the hydrogen peroxide 'plug' broke open.

I'm not keen on that happening again. It was distinctly inconvenient.

But let's talk about the Christmas movie I watched yesterday ─ I tuned it in early last evening via the YouTube 'app' that I have downloaded into our T9 Android 8.1 TV Box.

The movie was 2006's Home by Christmas, and the lead actress was Linda Hamilton.

I became a pretty big fan of hers when I witnessed her physical transformation in the Terminator movies as the Sarah Connor character ─ the actress put on some impressive muscle, and it looked really good on her!

However, that was quite a few years back, and even by 2006 dear Linda was showing some age (she turned 63 just under two months ago).

I liked the movie, but I won't try to watch it anytime soon with my younger brother because ─ even though I located two sources for the movie at YouTube ─ both of them went silent around the 55-minute mark, and remained so for a number of minutes. And even when the sound came back, it soon enough went silent once again for a much shorter duration.

As for Linda Hamilton and her role in the movie, she still looked pretty good to me. She was to be wooed in the movie by actor Rob Stewart, who portrayed a very nice guy who also happened to be a doctor. He eventually of course won her over, and they would no doubt have a 'forever after' happy ending.

Of interest to me is the fact that Rob Stewart just happens to be over five years younger than actress Linda Hamilton ─ I love it when the older girl gets the younger guy ─ even though the age difference was not trotted out in the movie plot. It was just presented that the two characters were of a similar age, I suppose.

If ever I find a copy of the movie that doesn't have that issue with the defective sound so deep into it, I would like to watch it anew with someone ─ even my younger brother.

And speaking of the lad, I am hoping to have the evening to myself ─ more often than not, he spends Saturday evenings with his girlfriend Bev and sleeps overnight at her home. If that holds true this evening, then I plan to tune in another Christmas movie yet to be determined.

I will accompany the movie with some Appleton Estate Signature Blend amber rum from Jamaica ─ a birthday present I received in October.

And I will turn on the outside Christmas lights ─ something I have only done for any length of time last Saturday evening. I don't turn them on during the other days of the week because my drunken younger brother is such unpalatable company once he staggers home in the evening from wherever he has been drinking, that I have been going to bed early to avoid being bothered with him.

I can't rely upon him to turn off the outdoor Christmas lights, and some of the strings have been up for as many as 15 years ─ they might be a fire risk, and oughtn't to be left on overnight. Thus, it is just better not to turn them on at all when I know I will not be sitting up to monitor them.

Actually, my evening has already begun, so I must soon bring this post to a close.

I got out this morning and hiked the two miles to Surrey Place / Central City and did some grocery shopping at Walmart, and then bought three $30 gift packs of lottery scratch tickets to use as Christmas presents ─ the first gifts I have bought so far, believe it or not!

I had only fortified myself with a 1,000-mg tablet of Vitamin C and a black instant coffee, and left here before my brother had yet risen. I don't drive, so I have to walk. Nevertheless, once out, I actually felt quite good despite my probable viral affliction.

I suppose there has been light rain today, but any that fell on me was inconsequential. Nevertheless, the air and everything else was saturated with moisture.

The last thing I want to trot forth is the following three-image commemorative collage that Google Photos created today from three photos that were taken on this day back in 2012, and which are filed away in a Google Photos album:

The two lads are my stepsons ─ the eldest brother is wearing the suit. But why? I can no longer remember, and I have referred to the original photos and discovered that I left no description with them.

Anyway, here are the three original photos:

It's a shame that Google Photos did not include one of the photos where the well dressed lad was posed with his mother ─ I am going to present a pair of the photos here anyway:

Okay, it's time to proofread this post and get it published; and then decide upon a movie, turn on the outdoor Christmas lights, and get at the show...and the rum!
