Early Morning Grocery Shopping

Despite sitting up last evening until nearly midnight in operation of our Android TV Box to locate an episode each of three of the T.V. series that my younger brother and I follow ─ as well as having a can each of strong (8% alcohol) malt beer and regular (5.5% alcohol) beer ─ I rose around 4:00 a.m.

I felt far from hale or rested, but I remained up, putting a little work into the post I should soon have published at one of my six hosted websites.

And then no later than 5:30 a.m., I began readying for the 5.625-mile round trip hike to the Real Canadian Superstore outlet (Google map) that opens at 7:00 a.m. It was barely after 6:00 a.m. when I set off under lightly clouded skies with occasional breaks of sunshine.

I also had my younger brother's monthly household expenses reconciliation cheque to deposit along the way at an outdoor ATM at the Coast Capital Savings headquarters building (Google map) approximately a mile or so from here.

My brother had given me the cheque more than a week ago, but I have been remiss in getting the thing deposited.

I did not have to rush, for this was the earliest I have yet left home to shop at that specific store. In fact, I had to slow my pace considerably toward the end of the trip, and even then I arrived just in time to stand at the end of a small lineup of folks awaiting the opening of the doors.

The trip was a success in that I found the store's dairy section was stocked with the Dairyland heavy liquid whipping cream that I was after that has a normal price of two one-litre cartons for $7.16 (or $3.58 per carton). A single carton is priced at $5.58, and that's in the ballpark for what other markets seem to charge ─ none of them have any two-for-one specials like the Superstore does, however.

And thus the long walk (I do not drive).

I bought just three other items, for the trip home can become something of a challenge for this 70-year-old when the additional load is taken into account.

I was back home not quite 10 minutes beyond 8:00 a.m., and only my youngest stepson was up.

I was to return to bed about an hour later, but only enjoyed a short nap, waking from it to check the time not much more than an hour after returning to bed. However, my body was in such a state of decline from the outing that I lay where I was for another ten minutes or more, just tingling from the overall exertion.

Today was my brother's second of four sessions under the Responsible Driver Program that he has to legally attend due to an impaired driving conviction that occurred quite late last year.

The Responsible Driver Program is discussed here and here.

Fortunately for him, due to COVID-19 bans on gatherings, he has only had to undergo telephone sessions with a counsellor. I think that my brother must be on the eight-hour programme, and not the alternative that is twice as long.

Today's session was his second, and now he is half done. His next session will be in two weeks; and then the final will be three weeks after that one.

I don't think he's even on the phone for an hour. Considering that if he actually had to travel to and attend a group session that would be two hours in duration, these telephone versions have to be a breeze by comparison.

He got today's call around 1:20 p.m. at latest, if I am recalling correctly. He had been told at the conclusion of his previous session that the counsellor would try to ensure that the call came as soon around 1:00 p.m. as possible.

This allowed my brother to have his usual daily midday bed rest first. And then soon after the call, he left to eventually end up drinking somewhere. I never know if he will return Saturday evenings, for he quite often will spend his latter Saturdays with his girlfriend Bev and then stay at her home overnight.

It doesn't matter too much to me if he returns home reasonably early and is in sensible shape, thereby obliging me to sit up late in operation of our Android TV Box (my brother isn't savvy to its operation), for I have no especially early shopping plans for the morrow.

What I am planning for the morning is a strong malt beer replenishment ─ the B.C. government liquor store where I purchase the brand that I usually drink is two miles away, and presently opens at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays.

I have not bought beer since back in December, if I'm remembering aright; so this is going to be a somewhat refreshing change where a walk is concerned. I just wish that I was able to be doing the hike earlier, though.

Incidentally, I had myself another nap towards mid-afternoon that was similar to my morning indulgement. And as I did so, I noticed ─ just ahead of 2:30 p.m., I believe ─ that it had begun lightly raining. It was still doing so when I later rose.

It is approaching 6:30 p.m. as I type these words. I would like to have both the day's scheduled exercising session, and a bath, so I had best bring this post to a conclusion here.
